Winter Care for Dogs

Winter is near. This year, when the temperatures drop, remember that your pooch needs protection from the cold, too.

Dog Apparel
Although dogs generally have fur throughout their bodies, many dogs' coats are not thick enough to shield them from harsh winter winds. For that reason, it is recommended that you keep our pups indoors when it is cold outside.

Some dogs, particularly short-coated dogs, small dogs and old dogs, may need additional protection from cold temperatures when they go outside for walks and potty breaks. Numerous retailers specialize in dog apparel, featuring wide selections of dog sweaters and dog coats for Chihuahuas, Great Danes and every breed in between. Some retailers also sell dog boots for working dogs that spend long periods of time outdoors. Canine footwear can protect them from the ice, snow and salt that can dry out and irritate their paws.

Insulated Dog House
Although keeping your dog indoors during the winter is the safest option, we understand that some dogs are trained to be outdoor dogs. Outdoor dogs need warm shelters that will remain dry and can protect them from the bitter cold. Insulated dog houses are great because they can hold your dog's body heat. When browsing dog houses, make sure that you choose one that is large enough that your dog can comfortably sit, turn and lie down but small enough to keep your dog warm.

Once you've selected the perfect dog house, place it in a dry area and make sure that entrance is faced away from the wind. Cover the entrance of the dog house with some form of protective, waterproof covering made of heavy cloth or plastic. Adding blankets, cedar shavings or hay may also help. Additionally, outdoor dog need more food and water in the winter to produce the amount of energy necessary to stay warm. Food and water should be served in plastic bowls and checked often to prevent any freezing that may occur.

Help your pets stay healthy this winter. Make sure you have all the items you need to keep them warm and comfortable until spring.
