Part of the Lyrichord Archive Series - Never before released recordings on CD from the Lyrichord vaults This recording of historical Japanese poetry chanted by Shufu Abe, was made in Japan by renowned recordist Katsumasa Takasago. The Japanese practice of chanting poetry originated as a result of studying Chinese poems (Kanshi) many of which were imported in the sixth century. Reading the poems with pitch and rhythm made recitation and memorization easier, and teachers of Chinese poetry must have composed their own melodies, which are difficult to trace now. Shufu Abe chants poems of the Edo Period, and the So Period and includes poems about the beauties of nature and countryside, historical poems, and a poem about the joys of drink. Tracks: 1.
