This sculpture is Remington's striking 1904 portrait of a hero of the western frontier -- a military sergeant of the 1st United States Volunteer Cavalry, more famously known as the "Rough Riders." Led by Colonel (later President) Theodore Roosevelt, this diverse regiment of miners, cowboys, clergymen, tradesmen and Native Americans fought in league during the Spanish American War (1898-1899). The ethos and bravery of those soldiers is eternalized by Remington in the image of this unnamed soldier. With his Rough Rider hat, crown creased and brim cocked on one side, and his kerchief tied traditionally at the neck, The Sergeant is a faithful replication of this courageous trooper of the Wild West.
