Details
Noted Western historian and artist T. Remington Davis paid special attention to detail in his rendering of "Buffalo" Bill Cody sitting alert in the saddle, scanning the area for danger. Cody is equipped for action with his Sharp's rifle, a Colt revolver and his trusted Bowie knife. His fringed buckskin pants are tucked into his boots, and he is wearing a red flannel shirt and fringed buckskin jacket. His horse, of a type supplied by Ben Ficklin, is equipped with a Santa Fe tree-type saddle with stirrup hangers on the saddle tree, iron stirrups, and a leather apron thrown across it. The mail carrier shows the 4 oblong compartments made of leather with flap lids, a clasp and hasp lock set-up. The artist has added a bronze relief to the base of the sculpture, depicting an action scene of an Indian in full chase, an Indian tepee, various desert flora, and a Pony Express station. The overall flavor and motion of this highly detailed bronze gives the viewer the feeling that he is witnessing a moment frozen in time.
