Details
This classic bronze sculpture by Evgeniy Victorovich Vuchetich (Russian, 1908-1974) depicts an athletic man holding a hammer aloft in one hand and a sword in the other. He is captured pounding his sword into a plowshare, an act meant to symbolize man's desire to put an end to war and to convert the means of destruction into creative tools for the benefit of mankind. The fluid movement of the idealized male nude figure is striking. Please click on the thumbnail images above to see additional views. The original bronze sculpture of Sword Into Plowshare was presented to the United Nations in 1959 by the Government of the USSR. This is a smaller casting created by the artist for use as gifts to dignitaries and sale to collectors. We have cast Sword into Plowshare in our own California art foundry using 11 lbs. (5 kg) of pure bronze. The sculpture is finished with a classic bronze patina in tones of browns and amber. It stands 11½" high by 9" wide (29 cm high x 23 cm wide). The sculpture is signed by the artist in the bronze, along with the date 1960, and we have cast our foundry seal into its bronze base. This is a fine bronze sculpture, made to high standards.
