This gorgeous 19th century French sculpture continues to be one of the most treasured sculptures of today. Cast in gleaming stainless steel, we feel that this classic work of art takes on a dazzling new life. The sculpture depicts a victorious David resheathing his sword after slaying Goliath, whose head lies on the ground beneath David's foot. The artwork was originally sculpted by Marius-Jean-Antonin Mercié (French, 1845-1916). David Vainqueur, also known as David After the Combat, earned Mercié a Medal of the First Class, and the Croix de la Légion d' Honneur, making him the only artist to receive it while still a student. A casting was commissioned by the French state and exhibited at the 1873 World Exhibition. This example is today to be found in the Musée d' Orsay in Paris. We have cast David Vainqueur using 50 lbs. (18 kg) of the finest grade of stainless steel. The sculpture is polished to a high gloss that requires virtually no maintenance. It stands a substantial 36" high by 16½" wide (92 cm high x 42 cm wide). The sculpture is signed "A Mercie" and carries our foundry seal in its stainless steel base.
