Details
The Galapagos Islands, located in the Pacific Ocean 600 miles off the Coast of Ecuador, are home to many rare and exotic species of animals. The Islands attracted the interest of Charles Darwin who wrote about them in 1835. In 1879, the French agronomist was invited to the Islands by Manuel J. Cobos. He planted a variety of antique bourbon coffee. Sadly, cultivation of the coffee was abandoned in 1915. In the early 1990’s the forgotten coffee plantation was rediscovered. Work began on preparing the plantation for cultivation when it was realized that the same trees planted over 130 years earlier were still producing excellent coffee beans. Typically, a coffee tree will only produce for 30-40 years. Galapagos Island Coffee is limited to a production of 5,000 bags per year by the local Island law. The coffee is produced under natural environments, implementing natural resources and is harvested by people living on the islands. Due to the Islands’ exotic and fragile ecosystem, the use of chemicals and pesticides is prohibited. Bohanan’s is pleased to offer this rare and exclusive coffee which transcends a rich and nutty flavor with a fruity, lightly sweet finish.
