AFM Safecoat DuroStain is a premium quality, fast curing, flat-finish semi-transparent stain for interior and exterior surfaces. It promotes penetration of porous surfaces and has high adhesion for superior protection as a decorative colorant. It contains no aromatic solvents and no formaldehyde. Safecoat DuroStain is recommended for all wood surfaces.
Benefits
- Excellent pigmentation stability
- Superior, durable stain
- LEED qualified product
- Low-odor, non-offensive to installer and occupant
- Contains no Formaldehyde preservative
- Low VOC content of 208 grams/liter (measured without water)
Surface Preparation
Surfaces to be stained with DuroStain should be sound and cleaned of dirt, dust, grease, wax, silicon, soap, and oil, and must be completely free of mold, mildew, or fungus contamination. Cleaning surface with a natural all-purpose cleaner is recommended. Before application, it is very important to test DuroStain in a small section of the surface to be stained to be sure shade and intensity of color is acceptable. Previously painted or sealed surfaces will not accept stain readily. Consequently, stripping of old paint or sealer followed by rinsing and sanding will be required before application of DuroStain. Surface should be dry before application.
Application
Always have adequate ventilation. Before using, stir DuroStain well, then apply it evenly without reduction using a high quality nylon or synthetic bristle brush. To adjust intensity of color, best results will be obtained by staining six square foot sections of the surface and wiping off excess stain while it is still wet to acheve the desired intensity of color. Always keep a wet edge. Darkness of stain my be increased by high surface porosity , wiping off less stain, or letting the stain dry longer before wiping. The shade of the stained surface will be affected by the color and type of wood (example: white pine is very porous and will be stained darker than oak). Reduce if desired for spraying with up to 1/2 pint of water per gallon. Always use a painter's mask when spraying. Do not apply in direct sunlight. Make sure to wipe off any excess stain which does not penetrate into the wood.
Coverage / Drying Time
One gallon of DuroStain covers approximately 300 square feet in one coat depending on surface porosity and the intensity of the stain color desired. Under normal conditions, which include a dry surface, access to fresh air flow, moderate humidity, and temperatures above 55F, DuroStain dries to touch in one hour and is recoatable after two hours. Thick application, high humidity, or conditions other than normal will cause to dry and cure more slowly.
Clean Up and Disposal
Clean tools and equipment while they are still wet with a natural all-purpose cleaner and warm water. Any remaining product that will not be used can be poured onto newspaper and allowed to dry and then disposed with municiple trash collection. Empty cans should be left open outdoors for one day and recycled with steel recyclables.
Limitations
Safecoat stains are made without formaldehyde preservatives. Store in airtight containers and do not contaminate. . If you plan to use only a portion of the can, then stir DuroStain thoroughly and pour amount to be used into clean container. Reseal can and work with stain in new container. Do pour left-over stain back into contents in can as it could contaminate. Do not use when indoor or surface temperature is below 55F.
Health Precautions
As with all coatings and stains, keep container tightly closed and out of the reach of children. Do not take internally and always use adequate ventilation. If you are chemically sensitive, always test for personal tolerance.
