The host bus adapter or HBA, transmits the data between the host device and the storage system in a SAN (serial attached network) and takes on the tasks of storing and retrieving data, thus allowing the host microprocessor to focus on improved server per- formance. HBAs are mostly used in Fibre Channel SAN environments and are also used for connecting SATA and SCSI devices. The emergence of iSCSI in the past few years has led to the development of another type of host bus adapter, the Ethernet HBA.
