Special Offer 2009 American Gold Buffalo Coins American Gold Buffalo coins have taken the market by storm. First issued in July 2006, Their 24kt purity, beautiful design and low mintages have quickly established them as the world’s preeminent gold bullion coins. The coins have the same $50 face value and one ounce gold weight as American gold eagles, but unlike gold eagles these coins are struck in .9999 pure 24kt gold. These coins hold the unique distinction of being the first 24kt gold coins in U.S. mint history. Only 260,000 coins were struck in 2006 a fraction of the number of American Gold Eagles. The popularity of American gold Buffalos grew into 2007 and was so popular in 2008 that the mint produced a four-coin set (one-ounce, half-ounce, quarter-ounce and tenth-ounce). The total mintage for all three years of issue is approximately 490,000 coins, a shockingly low number when you consider that over 1 million American gold eagles have been struck in a single year. Due to the recession the U.S. mint has cut back production and discontinued many items that are not required by law including the fractional gold Buffalo coin sets. The new 2009 American gold Buffalo has just been released and with a small window before the end of the year the mintage should be very low
