Product Details

The Underwood slogan for its standard models was "the machine you will eventually buy," a decidedly un-seductive phrase that's fairly accurate for this solid, reliable and well-featured typewriter. But what made the Master truly famous was a publicity stunt dreamed up by Underwood marketing folks: A giant size working replica of the Underwood Master was created for the 1939 World's Fair in New York. The enormous machine took 3 years to build, and when completed weighed 14 tons; each typebar was at least 45 pounds and the carriage alone weighed 3,500 pounds. Touted as the "World's Largest Typewriter," it took paper measuring 9 x 12 feet, and used a ribbon 5 inches wide by 100 feet long. It was transported to the World's Fair in two boxcars.
