In 1930s Kentucky, the Blue Grass State, the mandolin of Bill Monroe combined forces with old-time fiddle, fingerstyle banjo, and rhythm guitar to form the Blue Grass Boys – and a new genre was born. The origins of Bluegrass are profiled here with tracks by Monroe’s boys, Larry Sparks and J D Crowe as well as a composition by Bill Monroe interpreted by the Bluegrass Album Band. In the late 1960’s the scene developed into ‘Newgrass’ or progressive bluegrass represented here by artists such as Bela Fleck.
