Four US and Soviet ethnomusicologists journeyed to Siberia in 1987 to record musicians whose repertory stemmed from an oral tradition. The Tuvans, very rural herders, are a South Siberian Turkic people. Their most striking music is "throat-singing." High biphonic pitches are sequenced into melodies and manipulated with extreme virtuosity in a number of canonized styles. These ancient traditions and methods are described in authoritative notes with photos, maps and further resources. 31 items.
