There's little doubt that motorcycle Grand Prix racing now provides more spectacle per race than any other powersport. Not only is it quite common for the lead to change more than ten times in a race, but the pack of several leading riders often do battle only inches apart for lap after nailbiting lap. The season itself was one where the fortunes of each and every front runner for the title rose and fell, just like the runners themselves! The record books in years to come will show the bare facts: 1988 500cc World Champion Eddie Lawson (Marlboro Yamaha). Lawson won 4 of the first 7 GP's, and, with '87 Champ Wayne Gardner struggling to get the Rothman's Honda competitive, seemed to be on course for his third title. Suddenly the Honda came good, Gardner registered three straight wins, and once more the title battle was on! But this was not just a two-horse race! Pepsi Suzuki rider Kevin Schwantz provided the first shock-win of the year at the Japanese GP, and Lucky Strike Yamaha runners Kevin Magee and Wayne Rainey also won their first GP ever. And that's not forgetting the spectacular antics of Randy Mamola who provides more than a few thrills in this video! For sure, the Champ for '88 was Eddie Lawson, but The American Express had to fight hard all the way to reclaim his crown. Sit back and enjoy the battle from the best trackside seat ever offered to GP fans! Length: 60 Minutes
